Quake is the classic first-person shooter from 1996, made by id Software after Doom, and it was one of the first games to build its levels, monsters and weapons in full 3D. This browser version contains the shareware episode, Dimension of the Doomed, so you can play through the famous opening maps right away. You start at a military base and soon fall through a portal into a dark world of stone castles, lava pits and slime pools. The enemies are as memorable as the levels: grunts with shotguns, guard dogs, chainsaw ogres who throw grenades, leaping fiends and the enormous shambler that shoots lightning. Your arsenal grows from a simple shotgun to the double-barrel, nailgun, grenade launcher and rocket launcher, and power-ups like Quad Damage turn you into a one-man army for a short time. For the multiplayer arena side of the series, check out Quake III Arena.
Move with W, A, S, D or the arrow keys, aim with the mouse and fire with the left mouse button or Ctrl. Jump with Space and press the number keys to switch weapons. Health packs and armor are scattered around every level, so remember where they are when a big fight begins. Strafe sideways while shooting instead of standing still, especially against ogres and their bouncing grenades. Many walls hide secret rooms: shoot suspicious textures and look for switches to find extra ammo and power-ups. Save rockets and grenades for tough monsters like ogres and fiends, and never fight a shambler up close: keep your distance, hit it with the nailgun or shotgun, and duck behind cover when it charges its lightning.
