Against the computer, focus on fundamentals: push a pawn into the centre, bring out your knights and bishops, castle to protect your king and only then think about attacking. Before every capture, check what your opponent can do in reply, because the higher levels love to bait you with a free-looking piece. When you get ahead in material, trade pieces to simplify the position, and do not waste time in a won endgame - your score keeps ticking down until the checkmate.
