Grand Theft Auto 3 is the game that took the series into full 3D and created the open-world crime formula that so many games still follow. You play as Claude, a silent criminal who is betrayed during a bank robbery and ends up in Liberty City after escaping from a police convoy. To survive, you work for the city's gangs, including the Mafia, the Yakuza and the Colombian cartel, doing jobs like driving getaway cars, chasing rivals and blowing things up. Between missions the city is yours to explore: steal any car on the street, tune into the radio stations, take on taxi or ambulance side jobs, or cause trouble and see how many police stars you can survive. The map is split into three islands that open up as the story moves forward. After finishing it, you can continue the story in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Walk with W, A, S, D and look with the mouse; press F or Enter to get in and out of vehicles. In a car, W accelerates, S brakes and reverses, A and D steer and Space is the handbrake for sharp turns. Left-click to attack or shoot and use the mouse wheel to switch weapons. Follow the colored markers on the radar to start missions. When you get a wanted level, break the police line of sight, drive into a Pay 'n' Spray garage to lose your stars, or pick up the police bribe icons hidden around the city. The game takes a moment to load because it is a full 3D world, so let it finish before pressing keys.
