Overview

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is the rage game that defined a genre. You are a man sitting in a metal cauldron, you have a sledgehammer, and you have a mountain of scattered junk to climb - furniture, pipes, rocks, playground equipment - using nothing but that hammer to hook, push and launch yourself upward. There are no checkpoints. There is no save point. A single bad swing near the summit can send you sliding all the way back to the very first rock, undoing an hour of progress in about four seconds, and the game will not even pretend to sympathise. What it does instead is talk to you: Foddy narrates the whole climb personally, offering philosophical asides about failure, frustration and why anyone would build a game like this, delivered at exactly the moments you least want to hear them. Mastering the hammer takes real practice, and the moment the movement finally clicks is genuinely exhilarating. If you like brutal climbing challenges, you might also like Getting Over It and Climb Over It.

How to Play?

Control and achieve victory:

The entire game is controlled with the mouse - move your cursor and the hammer follows it directly, with no buttons to press at all. Push the hammer head against the ground or an object and drag to lever yourself forward, hook it over a ledge and pull to haul your pot upward, and swing it in a wide arc to fling yourself across gaps. Small, deliberate movements are far safer than big ones. Go slowly, plant the hammer before committing to a swing, and accept that falling is part of learning the route.
